Service

Whatever the goal of the week, an Environmental Service component, that requires action and reflection, is always included as a feature of the itinerary. These are examples of one day Service Activities that Little Brown Kiwi has developed and supported in the past.  They feature in all trips and they could also be easily be developed into 3-4 day stand alone Environmental Service Experiences.  Students are encouraged to take ownership of the Service experience and are involved from the pre-trip stage right through to the post trip evaluation.

Project Kiwi requires students to work alongside rangers to protect New Zealand’s iconic flightless bird. Sleep out with the Kiwi, create a rodent free zone, take part in nNative planting and assist in emergency Kiwi recovery.

Takahe Rescue lets students play a lead role in the fight against Takahe extinction.  Thought to be extinct up until the mid 20th Century, Takahe are fighting for survival with the assistance of IB students form around the world.  With just 280 Takahe thought to be in existence in 2006, this project is an urgent and significant one.  Students work at the rearing unit in the remote area of Fiordland Nnational Park.  Their roles include planting, nurturing chicks and releasing Takahe back into their natural habitat.

The Native Tree Cove. 
This unique join venture between IBInternational Schools and the Department of Conservation allows schools to take ownership of an area of regenerating Native Bush.  Students lead preparation and planting programs of trees such as Totara, Kauri and Fern.  Students are encourage to make an impact that their children and grandchildren will see, enjoy and benefit fromappreciate.

Department of Conservation Service
There are hundreds of community conservation projects, working in partnership with DOC, around the country – fFrom restoring forests, coasts and wildlife, to managing huts and tracks and historic places. Join an existing one or work with Little Brown Kiwi to plan and take action by starting your own, examples of this include Dune Conservation in Whangamata and the International Schools Native Tree Cove, .
